Vancouver is Canada's main legal market on the Pacific coast and the centre of private practice in British Columbia. It is smaller than Toronto, with lower published large-firm pay, but it has a deep bench of national firms and long-established BC firms, and a strong pull for lawyers who want to live on the West Coast.
How big the market is
British Columbia had 15,043 practising lawyers in the Federation of Law Societies' 2025 statistics report. The report counts 22 BC law firms with more than 50 lawyers, 18 with 26 to 50, and 3,254 sole practitioners. Most of the larger firms practise from Vancouver.
What lawyers earn
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Median lawyer wage, Lower Mainland and Southwest | $66.65 an hour, about $139,000 a year | Job Bank |
| Low and high wage, Lower Mainland and Southwest | $38.46 to $112.09 an hour | Job Bank |
| Median lawyer wage, British Columbia | $65.00 an hour | Job Bank |
| First-year base at large firms, as reported | about $115,000 | Canadian Law Forum |
Large Vancouver firms do not publish their associate grids. Associates reported a first-year base of about $115,000 in late 2023 and early 2024, and we have not seen reports of a later raise, so treat that figure as a floor to check rather than a current scale. The regional median sits close to Toronto's, because it covers lawyers in every setting, not only large firms.
Who hires
Firms that signed up for the 2026 remote on-campus interviews for Vancouver summer positions, as listed by the University of Saskatchewan, give a good picture of the large-firm market:
- National and Western Canadian firms with Vancouver offices: Bennett Jones, Blakes, BLG, Fasken, Gowling WLG, McCarthy Tétrault, MLT Aikins, and Norton Rose Fulbright.
- Firms with deep BC roots: Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang, Clark Wilson, Harris & Company, Lawson Lundell, and Richards Buell Sutton.
- Government: the Department of Justice Canada's British Columbia litigation office also took part.

| Remote on-campus interviews | Wednesday, September 23, 2026 |
| Interview call day | Friday, October 2, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. |

Vancouver runs earlier than Toronto, so students applying in both cities may face Vancouver offers before Toronto's in-firm week begins. Plan which offers you would accept before October 21.
Moving to Vancouver from another province
Lawyers in good standing in another common-law province do not need to requalify to practise in British Columbia. Under the National Mobility Agreement, signatory law societies let lawyers from other signatory provinces practise temporarily, up to 100 days in a calendar year if they meet the conditions, and transfer permanently without writing bar exams. The Law Society of British Columbia sets its own forms, fees, and timelines, so check them before you plan a start date.
If you are leaving a firm, your clients choose who keeps their files. The Law Society of BC publishes precedent letters that tell clients they can stay with the firm or move with you. Read them before you announce a move.
Planning a lateral move to Vancouver
Compare offers on what you keep, not just the base. Vancouver housing costs are among the highest in Canada, and large-firm pay there is reported to be below Toronto's. If you have a book of business, our book of business calculator shows how much of it is likely to follow you, and our sample lawyer resumes show how to present a practice to a new firm.
