    Sample lawyer resumes for Canada

    Last updated

Here are two complete sample lawyer resumes in the Canadian format: a corporate associate in their third year of call and a litigation associate in their fifth. Both are fictional people at fictional firms, written to show how to present bar admission, practice experience, and education so a hiring partner can read them in under a minute. Each comes with notes on why it works and an editable Word version.

Fictional examples, not real candidates. Use them for structure and wording ideas, and describe only your own experience.

    Why this works

    • Bar admission sits at the top. A reader screening associate resumes looks for the year of call first, because it sets seniority and pay.
    • Deals are described by type and size, never by client. The value range and the kind of agreement show experience without breaching confidentiality.
    • Each bullet starts with what the lawyer did: drafted, negotiated, ran, managed, advised. Responsibility is clear, including supervising juniors.
    • Student roles stay short. Once you have associate experience, articling and summer roles need one or two lines each.
    • Nothing personal. No photo, date of birth, marital status, or references line.

Member, Ontario Bar Association, Civil Litigation Section

Fictional example. The person and firm are invented.

    Why this works

    • Advocacy experience comes first. Motions argued, courts appeared in, and trial or appeal roles are what litigation readers scan for.
    • Numbers are honest and checkable. "More than 15 motions" and "second chair on a 10-day trial" are specific without overstating the lawyer's role.
    • The clerkship stays. A court clerkship signals research and writing strength, so it keeps its own entry even five years later.
    • The articling year is one line. It confirms the path to call without crowding out associate work.
    • Two pages at most. Five years of practice fits comfortably; a longer list of matters belongs in a separate representative matters list if a firm asks for one.

What a Canadian lawyer resume should include

    • Name and contact details: city and province, phone, and a professional email. A LinkedIn link is optional.
    • Bar admission: the law society and year of call, near the top. Describe any pending admission accurately.
    • Experience in reverse order: firm, city, title, and dates, with three to five bullets for your current role.
    • Education: law degree, school, and year, plus honours that matter. Earlier degrees take one line.
    • Languages and relevant skills: especially French or other languages your clients use.

    What to leave out

Leave out a photo, date of birth, marital status, citizenship, and your social insurance number. Ontario's human rights guidance tells employers not to ask for this kind of information before an offer, and it adds nothing to a legal resume. As the Ontario Human Rights Commission puts it, "employers should not request photos of potential employees" (Ontario Human Rights Commission).

Never name clients or describe a matter in a way that identifies one, unless it is already public and the client has agreed. The Law Society of Ontario's Rules of Professional Conduct require lawyers to keep client information confidential. Describe deals and cases by type, size, court, and your role instead, as both samples do.

Skip the objective statement and the line saying references are available on request. Firms assume both.

Adjust the order to your stage

Newer lawyers can lead with education and awards, especially for a first lateral move. Once you have a few years of practice, experience should lead, as it does in both samples. For lateral moves at the mid-level and above, many firms also ask for a separate list of representative matters. Keep that list off the resume itself so the resume stays at two pages. Our lawyer resume length guide covers when to use one page or two.

    Use these samples well

    1. Pick the sample closest to your practice and download the Word file.
    2. Replace every line with your own experience. Do not copy achievements or numbers you cannot stand behind in an interview.
    3. Check your length with the resume length checker, then read the Canadian legal resume format guide.
    4. If you already have a resume, format it with our free resume formatter for a clean PDF in minutes.
