Lateral Law Report is an independent publication about careers in Canadian private practice. We cover what lawyers need to plan their next move: what firms pay, how the student recruits run, how Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary compare, and how lateral moves work. Every figure links to its original source and every guide shows when it was last updated. We were previously published as LegalCV at mylegalresume.com; old links redirect here.
What we publish
- The Weekly Brief: a short, sourced roundup each week of recruit dates, law society changes, pay, and the lateral market.
- Career guides: pay scales, firm profiles, licensing, city markets, and moving provinces.
- Insights and data: the numbers behind those guides in one place.
- Free tools: a book of business calculator, a lateral business plan builder, and a resume formatter.
- Resume guides: for lawyers, law clerks, paralegals, and legal assistants, with free templates and samples.
How we work
We rely on official and primary sources first: law societies, courts, government data, and firms' own pages. Our methodology explains how we choose sources, date figures, and correct errors. Lateral Law Report is not affiliated with or endorsed by any law firm, and our guides are general information, not legal, financial, or immigration advice.
The tools and your data
The calculators and planners run in your browser and send nothing to us. The resume formatter is the one tool that uploads a file; it organizes the experience you already have and does not add qualifications. Sharing your resume with a legal recruiter is optional and needs a separate opt-in. Read the Privacy Notice and how the formatter works before uploading.
