Lateral Law Report (laterallawreport.com, formerly LegalCV at mylegalresume.com) publishes career news and guides for Canadian lawyers and offers a free legal resume formatter that works without an account. This notice describes what we collect, why, where it is stored, and how to reach us for access or deletion requests under Canadian privacy expectations (including PIPEDA principles).
What we collect
- Every upload: the original PDF or DOCX is saved in a private Supabase storage bucket when you upload it, whether or not formatting succeeds or you ask for recruiter help. Text is then extracted in your browser and processed to prepare the formatted result. A submission record stores the file path, upload time, and recruiter-choice flag. Contact details inside the original resume are part of that saved file.
- Optional recruiter contact: only if you choose “Share with a recruiter” and check the consent box, we additionally store the name and email you enter, mark your record as opted in, and may contact you about relevant legal roles.
- Technical and abuse-prevention data: basic request information such as IP address (hashed for rate limits), timestamps, and security logs needed to operate the Edge Functions.
- Cookies / ads: Google Ads (gtag) and site-verification tags may set or read cookies or similar identifiers for advertising measurement. See Google’s policies for how that vendor processes data.
The Weekly Brief newsletter
If you subscribe to the Weekly Brief, we store your email address, the page you subscribed from, the time you subscribed, and the consent statement you agreed to. We use your email only to send the Weekly Brief and messages about your subscription, and we do not sell or share it. Every issue includes a link to unsubscribe, or you can email will@laterallawreport.com to be removed. When you unsubscribe we stop sending immediately and keep a record of the opt-out so you are not added back by mistake; ask us and we will delete the address entirely. We may use an email delivery provider to send issues, and it processes your address only for that purpose.
Why we use it
- To structure and return a formatted resume you request
- To prevent abuse (size limits and rate limits)
- If you opt in, to evaluate recruiting interest and contact you about legal roles
- To measure ads conversions where the Google tag is present
Automated processing and model training
Resume text for formatting is sent through our secure backend to a third-party automated processing service. We do not use your resume to train our own models and we do not sell your resume content. Formatting is configured as a processing task, not a product-training feed on our side.
Where data is stored
Application data and all uploaded resumes are stored using Supabase (database and private object storage). Infrastructure may process data in Canada or other jurisdictions depending on your project configuration and subprocessors. Service providers may process data outside Canada; by using the Service you understand that cross-border processing may occur.
Who can access saved resumes
Saved resumes and submission records are not public. The site restricts reads to approved admin accounts; Supabase project administrators and service credentials also have backend access needed to operate the service. Ordinary visitors and other signed-in accounts cannot browse the private bucket. Skipping recruiter contact does not delete the saved file.
Retention and deletion
Uploaded resumes and their submission records are stored without an automatic expiry in the current product configuration, including when you skip recruiter contact or formatting fails. You may request deletion, subject to legal and security requirements. Recruiting contact details are also retained until deletion is requested or they are no longer needed.
To request access to, correction of, or deletion of a saved resume or recruiting profile, email will@laterallawreport.com. We aim to respond within a reasonable time.
Your choices
You can use the formatter and skip recruiter contact entirely, but your uploaded resume is still saved. If you do not want the original file stored, do not upload it. The upload notice links to these Terms and this Privacy Notice near the dropzone.
Children / students
The Service is aimed at adults pursuing legal education or legal employment. It is not directed at children under 13. Law students of typical university age may use the Service for their own application materials.
