Calgary's legal market: pay, firms, and how to move there

Calgary's legal market for lawyers: Job Bank wages, reported large-firm pay, how many large firms Alberta has, the 2026 student recruit dates, and moving to Alberta.

    Last updated

Calgary is Alberta's business capital and the third of Canada's large private practice markets. Many of its biggest legal practices serve energy, infrastructure, and corporate finance clients, and most national firms run a Calgary office alongside firms founded in Alberta. Lawyer wages in the region are high by Canadian standards, and the student recruit runs earlier than anywhere else in the West.

    How big the market is

Alberta had 13,117 practising lawyers in the Federation of Law Societies' 2025 statistics report, out of 15,621 members in total. The report counts 15 Alberta law firms with more than 50 lawyers and 23 with 26 to 50. Calgary and Edmonton share the province's large-firm market.

    What lawyers earn

Job Bank wages are for NOC 41101 from 2023 to 2024. Yearly figures assume 2,080 paid hours. Large-firm pay is what associates reported in February 2025.

Alberta's median lawyer wage is the highest of the three provinces in this comparison, and the Calgary region shows the widest spread, with a high wage above $200 an hour. Large-firm starting pay is reported to be well below Toronto's, so Alberta's higher median reflects pay across the wider market, not starting pay at the largest firms. Alberta also has no provincial sales tax, and its top provincial income tax rate is lower than Ontario's or British Columbia's, which matters when you compare offers at lawyer-level incomes.

Moving to Calgary from another province

Lawyers in good standing in another common-law province do not need to requalify to practise in Alberta. Under the National Mobility Agreement, signatory law societies let lawyers from other signatory provinces practise temporarily, up to 100 days in a calendar year if they meet the conditions, and transfer permanently without writing bar exams. The Law Society of Alberta sets its own forms, fees, and timelines, so check them before you plan a start date.

Planning a lateral move to Calgary

Lateral moves into Calgary often follow the work: energy, regulatory, and corporate finance practices hire when deal flow is strong. If you are bringing clients, estimate what will follow you with our book of business calculator, then set it out in a lateral business plan. Our sample lawyer resumes show how to present deals without naming clients.
