Welcome to the first Weekly Brief. The student recruit dominates the next two weeks, with Vancouver's in-firm interviews and offers landing before Toronto's call day. For practising lawyers, the Law Society of Ontario has widened what its public directory shows and is warning licensees about emails that impersonate it. And with new national figures out, we look at how big each of Canada's three main private practice markets really is.
This week: Vancouver offers, then Toronto
Vancouver's 2L recruit for summer 2027 reaches its peak next week. Under the Vancouver Bar Association's dates, as published by the University of Saskatchewan, in-firm interviews run from Monday, October 19 to Wednesday, October 21, and firms may make offers from 5:00 p.m. Pacific on October 21. Offers stay open until 5:00 p.m. the next day.
Toronto follows immediately. The Law Society of Ontario's procedures put the 2L call day on Friday, October 23 at 8:00 a.m., with in-firm interviews from November 2 to 4 and offers on the evening of November 4. Students in both recruits may hold a Vancouver offer before Toronto's in-firm week begins, so decide in advance which offers you would accept. Our call day planner helps you book Toronto slots without clashes.
Calgary is already done. Its in-firm week ran October 5 to 9 and offers went out on the afternoon of October 9, open for six hours, according to the University of Saskatchewan's summary of the Calgary protocol.
Regulators: more on the Ontario directory
Since September 1, the Law Society of Ontario's public Lawyer and Paralegal Directory shows more about each licensee. Amendments to By-Law 8 added findings of guilt, the practice of other regulated professions, and, in some cases, notice that the Law Society intends to seek interlocutory relief based on criminal or other charges (Law Society of Ontario). The directory already showed practising status, areas of law, regulatory history, and notices of proceedings.
The practical point for lawyers: clients and firms check the directory. Before a lateral move, look up your own listing and make sure your contact details and areas of practice are current.
Watch for emails that impersonate the Law Society
For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Law Society of Ontario reminded licensees that most of its messages arrive through LSO Connects, and that its emails come from an @lso.ca address. If a message seems urgent or unexpected, it advises not clicking links, opening attachments, or calling numbers in it, and checking through LSO Connects instead (Law Society of Ontario).
By the numbers: how big each market is
| Province | Practising lawyers | Firms with more than 50 lawyers |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 46,654 | 46 |
| British Columbia | 15,043 | 22 |
| Alberta | 13,117 | 15 |
Ontario has three times as many practising lawyers as British Columbia or Alberta, and twice as many large firms as British Columbia (Federation of Law Societies). The median lawyer in the Toronto region earns $69.74 an hour, about $145,000 a year, according to Job Bank. Our new Canadian legal markets guides compare Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary on pay, firms, and recruit dates.
