Toronto has three main student recruits, and each runs on fixed dates set by the Law Society of Ontario or agreed by employers and schools. Missing a deadline usually means waiting a full year, so this page puts every date for the current cycle in one place. All times are Eastern.
The 2L summer recruit (summer 2027 jobs)
The 2L recruit is the largest. Second-year students apply in the summer before 2L, interview on campus or online in the fall, and receive offers for a summer position the following year. Most large Toronto firms hire the bulk of their future articling class through this recruit. The dates below come from the Law Society's Toronto summer student recruitment procedures.
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Earliest application deadline | Monday, July 20, 2026, 5:00 p.m. |
| Recruitment suspension: contact limited to what the procedures allow, such as OCIs | July 20, 2026 until November 2, 2026, 8:00 a.m. |
| Call day: firms book in-firm interviews | Friday, October 23, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. |
| In-firm interviews | Monday, November 2, 8:00 a.m. to Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. |
| No-contact period | Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. |
| Offers may be made | Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. |
| Offers stay open until at least | Thursday, November 5, 2026, 5:00 p.m. |
Between the application deadline and call day, most firms run on-campus interviews (OCIs). Under the procedures, an OCI lasts no more than 20 minutes and a student meets each employer only once at that stage. Firms then use call day to invite the students they want to see again.
For each stage in detail, see the guides to call day, in-firm interviews, in-firm week etiquette, and offer day.
The 1L summer recruit (summer 2027 jobs)
The 1L recruit is smaller. Fewer firms take part and each hires only a handful of first-year students, but a 1L summer often leads to a 2L offer at the same firm. It runs in winter, on a compressed schedule with no on-campus stage.
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Application deadline | Wednesday, January 20, 2027, 5:00 p.m. |
| Call day | Tuesday, February 2, 2027 |
| Interviews | Tuesday, February 16 to Thursday, February 18, 2027 |
| No-contact period | Thursday, February 18, 2027, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. |
| Offers may be made | Thursday, February 18, 2027, from 5:00 p.m. |
| Offers stay open until at least | Friday, February 19, 2027, 5:00 p.m. |
Applications usually include a cover letter, resume, and first-term grades. Because first-term marks arrive close to the deadline, prepare everything else in December so you only need to add the transcript. Our 1L recruit guide covers it in detail.
The articling recruit
Students who did not summer at a firm that hires back, or who want a different kind of practice, look for articles separately. Toronto articling recruitment for large employers follows its own timeline, usually in the summer after 2L. For placements starting in the 2027 to 2028 licensing cycle, the Law Society's articling recruitment procedures set Toronto applications due June 26, 2026, call day on July 17, interviews August 10 to 12, and offers from 5:00 p.m. on August 12. See our articling recruit guide for Ottawa and the rest of Ontario.
Many smaller firms, clinics, government offices, and in-house teams hire outside any formal recruit, sometimes months before an articling term starts. Watch your career office job board and the Law Society's recruitment page all year rather than only during the formal windows.
If you do not secure articles, the Law Practice Program is the other route to the experiential training requirement in Ontario. The Law Society explains how articling and the LPP each satisfy the requirement.
What to have ready, and when
| When | Get ready |
|---|---|
| May to early July (before 2L) | Resume, a cover letter template, transcripts, and a list of target firms for the 2L recruit |
| August to September | OCI preparation and research on each firm you applied to |
| Mid-October | Your call day plan: ranked firms, a calendar, and a quiet place to take calls |
| December (1L) | 1L recruit applications ready except first-term grades |
| Spring (after 2L) | Articling applications if you are not returning to a summer firm |
A clean, consistent resume carries you through every stage. Firms reread it before each interview, so keep the version you send accurate and easy to scan. Our Canadian legal resume format guide covers length, section order, and file type.
Rules worth knowing before you start
- The procedures bind students as well as lawyers. A student who breaches them may face a Law Society Tribunal hearing on whether they meet the good character requirement for licensing.
- Firms must not pressure you or try to find out whether you would accept an offer, though you may volunteer it.
- Accepting is binding. Once you accept, you must tell the other firms right away, stop interviewing, and not accept another offer.
- Dates change each cycle. Check the Law Society procedures and your career office before relying on any date here.
